Ruins of Tarsonis | StarCraft: Brood War (Terran #3)

UED Flagship Aleksander, low orbit over the planet Tarsonis; former capital world of the Terran Confederacy.

BRIEFING

Adjutant: Captain, the Dominion shipyards have been destroyed, and it seems that General Duke has withdrawn his forces from this quadrant. We have impressed most of the remaining Dylarian defense forces into the fleet and stand ready to move to the next phase of our invasion.

Stukov: We’ve just received word from our research team that they’ve uncovered some kind of hidden weapons relay upon the planet Tarsonis. They report that it’s called Psi Disrupter, and that its purpose is somehow connected with the Zerg.

Duran: Admiral, during the Zerg invasion of these colonies, the Confederacy had manufactured a number of portable machines called Psi Emitters which had the uncanny ability to lure Zerg to their signals. It was rumored that they had created a specialized emitter that could disrupt the Zerg’s communicatins, but Emperor Mengsk was never able to find it.

It appears that this Psi Disrupter is the machine he was looking for. I must humbly suggest to you, Admiral, that the Disrupter be destroyed as quickly as possible. If it should fall into the hands of the Dominion we could face some very serious problems.

DuGalle: Hmm. A prudent call, Lieutenant. I am inclined to agree.

Stukov: But Admiral, this device could insure our victory over the Zerg! It is foolhardy to discard such an advantage!

Duran: Surely, Vice Admiral, you don’t doubt the tenacity of your own fleet? Your Directorate forces will devastate the Zerg without the need for such a device.

Stukov: Listen here, Lieutenant, I’ve had just about enough of your-

DuGalle: This conversation is over, Alexei. Given the true nature of our mission to enslave the Overmind, we could hardly stand to have Mengsk control a device of this magnitude. This Psi Disrupter must be destroyed in order to safeguard our mission. Ensign, set your course for Tarsonis.

OBJECTIVES

  • Bring Duran to the Psi Disrupter.
  • Duran must survive.

RESOURCES

4 SCVs, 12 Marines (8/12 inside Bunkers), 2 Medics, and Duran (Ghost).

Buildings: Command Center, Engineering Bay, 2 Bunkers, and 3 Supply Depots.

500 Minerals – 100 Vespene Gas – 18/34.

STRATEGY

Dropship: Go ahead, HQ.

DuGalle: Lieutenant Duran, since you have shown such concern for this device’s inherent danger, I charge you with finding the Disrupter and securing it. We will commence with its destruction once we’ve cleared the area.

Send the 4 SCVs to harvest minerals — each from a different mineral node. Any new SCVs should be assigned to a different node too.

Build a second Command Center.

Build 7 SCVs.

(00:30)

Adjutant: Captain, our sensors are tracking Zerg signals in every direction. It appears that our intelligence was correct.

Duran: Admiral, if we focus on destroying all of the hives in this area, we may be able to neutralize these Zerg without too much trouble.

NEW MISSION OBJECTIVES

  • Destroy Zerg hives to disable Zerg broods.
  • Bring Duran to the Psi Disrupter after Zerg hives are destroyed.
  • Duran must survive.

At 1:18 — a Mutalisk attacks your Barracks. Select the 4 Marines and 2 Medics and kill it. Shortly after, a few zerglings attack the south Bunker. Both Bunkers were pre-loaded with 4 Marines each when the game started.

Around 1:45 the construction of the second Command Center should be complete. Select the Command Center and press Lift Off. Now land it on the field of minerals southwest of your base to start your expansion base #1.

Select the Engineering Bay. Upgrade Infantry Weapons Level 1.

Attack this Spore Colony to aggro any Hydralisk and Zergling in the area.

OPTIONAL: Before attacking that Spore Colony, you can build a Bunker to welcome any incoming retaliation. That zerg base’s ramp is far to the north, so it will take them some time to reach you by ground.

Select the third Command Center by the cliffs. Press LIFT OFF. Move it toward the destroyed Zerg base. Wait until the Creep dissolves.

Build 5 Marines.

Select Comsat Station. Reveal the Zerg base northwest of your main base to search for the ramp.

Select all the new marines fresh from the Barracks, and group them in bunches of 12. Keybind those groups by pressing SHIFT + number (from 1-9). Set them to Rally northeast of your main base to prepare for invasion of another Zerg base. Standby. (Cursor below marks the Rally point of your Barracks and current Marines).

Build 3 Marines.

Build 2 Medics.

Check if you can land the third Command Center at the destroyed Zerg base. Otherwise, standby until the zerg creep dissipates.

Build 7 Marines.

Land the third Command Center at the zerg base. Not quite the best spot, but the zerg creep takes a long time to dissipate. This spot will do (when available).

Send 4 SCVs from main base to harvest minerals at expansion base #2 (the destroyed Zerg base).

Send all your Marines/Medics to the north.

Build 5 Marines.

Build 5 Medics.

Build 3 Marines.

Rally all your Marines/Medics to the spot marked by the cursor in the image below. As you see, there is a third expansion (Minerals field).

Use the Comsat Station to reveal this area. That’s the entrance to your next Zerg base invasion. That base is full of Ultralisks.

Now select all of the Marines/Medics you left idle at expansion base #2 (the destroyed Zerg base shown in the image below), and rally them to join your second army — as seen 2 images above.

Send 2 SCVs from main base to the expansion base #2 to harvest Minerals.

Double-check if the zerg creep dissipated at expansion base #2. If it did, Lift Off the Command Center and place it closer to the Refinery.

With your two armies merged into a massive one, attack the Zerg base starting with the Ultralisk, the Sunken Colony, and the Ultralisk Cavern.

This is how that base looks like in full. This zerg base has about 11 Sunken Colony, 2 Defilers, and 8 Ultralisks. Plus

Hydralisks and Zerglings.

Zerg Defilers will cast Dark Swarm (the orange cloud) in this area, which prevents you from targeting or attacking enemy units — so move your marines away when that happens.

Build 12 Marines.

Build 1 Medic.

Send all new Marines fresh from the Barracks to assist your army at the zerg base #2.

With Zerg base #2 destroyed, select the Starport and build a Tower Control addon.

Command your entire Army to attack Zerg base #3 (top-right corner of the mini-map).

Build 6 Marines.

Build 3 Medics.

Build 9 Marines.

Build a second Starport.

Select all freshly built Marines/Medics and send them to assist your army.

Continue to attack the Zerg base #3 — they have Mutalisks and Guardians.

Select the second Starport just completed. Build a Tower Control addon.

Select Starport #1. Build 2 Dropships.

Build 5 Marines.

Build 1 Medic.

To attack the last Zerg base (#4), load 6 Marines and 2 Medics into a Dropship and drop them at this high ground spot.

When Zerb base #3 is destroyed, send the entire army back to this spot in your main base (shown in the image above) to get loaded into dropships.

Continue to load/unload marines and medics in the high ground.

Second dropship might be complete by now.

Build more dropships if you want to speed up the process of transporting your army up there.

With the last Hive Cluster destroyed, escort Duran to the Beacon.

Duran: Captain, we’ve located the Psi Disrupter. Shall we plant the explosives on it?

Ghost: Lieutenant Duran, we’re here to relieve you. We’ve come with orders from Admiral Stukov himself to facilitate the Disrupter’s disassembly.

Duran: Very well. Take it away. Captain, I’ll be returning to the command ship presently.
