To Slay the Beast | StarCraft: Brood War (Zerg #8)

Infested platform over the planet Char; Kerrigan’s base of operations.

BRIEFING

Kerrigan: The time is finally upon us, my minions, to destroy the wretched Overmind and the last of its Renegade Cerebrates. We can count on the UED providing us with heavy resistance, but not even they can stand in our way. Now that the Matriarch, Raszagal is in my custody, I possess the means to attack the Overmind with impunity.

Duran: But my Queen, I thought only the Dark Templar’s energies could harm the Overmind and its Cerebrates. Even with the numerous Broods at your command, any attack we launch against the Renegades will be in vain.

Kerrigan: Not so, Duran. As a matter of fact, I’m expecting my secret weapon to be arriving very soon.

Duran: As you say, my Queen. But I still don’t understand wh–

We are receiving a transmission from an unidentified Protoss Carrier…

Kerrigan: That’s what I love about the Protoss… They’re so punctual.

Zeratul: Kerrigan, this is Zeratul. I demand to know why you’ve taken our Matriarch.

Kerrigan: Actually, Zeratul, she’s not the one I’m truly interested in. I stole her to get to you. You see, I need you and your brethren to kill the Overmind for me. The only way I had of assuring your cooperation was to take away that which you value most. However, I give you my word that once you’ve killed the Overmind, I’ll allow her to return to you.

Zeratul: As if your word held any value…

Raszagal: Zeratul, my faithful servant. You must aid Kerrigan in this endeavor. The Overmind is our common enemy. It must be destroyed to insure that our people will survive!

Zeratul: You ask me to aid this vile creature?

Raszagal: I do not ask this for myself. Nor do I ask it on Kerrigan’s behalf. I ask you to do this for our people, Zeratul. Obey me as you always have… Trust in my judgement.

Zeratul: Very well, Matriarch. The Overmind will die this day.

Rally all Hydralisks, Zerglings, and Overlords to this spot — air traffic passes through here to attack your base. Sit idle until Ventral Sacs is complete.

Load all your Hydralisks and Zerglings inside Overlords.

Maneuver from afar using the Ultralisk Cavern as reference to mimic this trajectory — avoiding the Spore Colony. Unload them at this location. Careful with Infested Terran and Lurkers. There are Mutalisks here too. Focus on the Sunken Colony, then the Infested Command Center. Then move west to destroy the Spore Colony. Then kill the Drones.

Return the Overlords — except 1-2 for Lurkers, and load more Hydralisks and Zerglings. Transport them to reinforce your army.

Build 6 Mutalisks at north expansion.

At the enemy base, kill everything you can from the edge of the high ground — such as the Supply Depots, and Overlords, and anything that comes to attack you. Stay up there for a bit while you build up Mutalisks. Better to wait for the enemy to send units one by one via Dropships/Overlords until their base is mostly empty, than to spearhead your way into the base and have lose all your units.

Build 2 Mutalisks at bottom-mid expansion.

By now the Mutalisk upgrades are complete.

Select a Spire. Mutate into Greater Spire.

Upgrade Flyer Attacks (A) Level 2.

Make sure all Zerglings and Hydralisks have been unloaded at the high ground location the other ones were unloaded at.

Now move all the Mutalisks to join the ground army in preparation for an invasion.

Drop 2 Drones at top-mid expansion and build 2 Hatcheries.

Send the Mutalisks to destroy the Missile Turret above the Terran Armory, while your Overlords unload all Hydralisks and Zerglings on top of the SCVs. Kill the Renegade Lurkers whenever you see one.

Enemy has Defilers. Make sure to move away from Dark Swarm as it prevents you from targeting enemies.

Select the Greater Spire. Upgrade Flyer Carapace (C) Level 2.

Select 12 Mutalisks at Rally Point and mutate them into Guardians.

Select 12 Mutalisks at Rally Point and mutate into Devourers.

Build 6 Mutalisks at east expansion.

Select all new Mutalisks and mutate into Guardians.

Send all new Mutalisks to assist your main force at the enemy base.

Load 2 Drones inside an Overlord and unload them to build 2 Hatcheries at the Terran base.

Select the Greater Spire. Upgrade Flyer Carapace (C) Level 3.

Send all your Guardians and Devourers to attack the inner plateau where the Overmind is. There are Goliaths, Valkyries, and Battlecruisers in this plateau. Get the Devourers to destroy all of them to protect the Guardians. Send the Hydralisks as well to do this.

Build 6 Drones at top-mid expansion.

Build more Mutalisks as the Supply Limit permits to replace lost Guardians/Devourers.

Keep sending Guardians and Devourers following the same pace.

Eventually you will manage to destroy the Terran base and the Overmind’s forces.

Drop the Overmind’s hit points down to 200 or less, but don’t stop attacking it or it will heal to full health.

Load Dark Templar inside an Overlord, and unload them at the Overmind.

Let the Dark Templar kill the Overmind.

Mission Complete.

This mission took 37:32 minutes to complete.

NOTE: The camera view switches to an area to the west of the Overmind. A Protoss Scout and 2 Corsairs move toward the Overmind. The Scout unloads Zeratul and 2 Dark Archon. 2 Overlords unload 3 Lurkers, Raszagal, and Kerrigan.

Zeratul: It’s done, Kerrigan. The Overmind is dead as you wished. Now I demand that you release the Matriarch at once!

Kerrigan: Of course. Raszagal, do you wish to return to your tribe?

Raszagal: No, my Queen. I wish only to serve you and remain at your side.

Zeratul: What treachery is this, Kerrigan? This pathetic creature cannot possibly be Raszagal!

Kerrigan: Ha ha ha. I promised that I’d allow her to return to you, Zeratul. But it looks to me like she doesn’t want to go.

Zeratul: You have corrupted her! Somehow you have poisoned her thoughts. Restore her to her rightful self, or you will pay dearly for this offense, Kerrigan!

Kerrigan: All right, Zeratul, you’ve got me. I made your Matriarch my slave long before I joined you on Shakuras. She made the mistake of underestimating my power just like everyone else did. And now she’s paid the price.

With her as my puppet I was able to eradicate the Renegades on Shakuras, and use you to kill the Overmind. And as you can see, your leader belongs to me now. Not bad, huh?

Zeratul: We shall see, Kerrigan. We shall see…

NOTE: Zeratul approaches Raszagal, and all Protoss units are Recalled by a unseen Arbiter.
